f. 1Fishing in the Great Lakes has similarities and differences to deep sea fishing.
-The comparison between commercial fishing in the Great Lakes and deep sea, highlighting the different fishing markets on the east coast and west coast as well as the ones in the Great Lakes, such as the similar nets and equipment they use.
-The contrasting points on how commercial fishing in the Great Lakes differs from deep sea fishing, highlighting the fishing boats sizes and uses, fishing seasons, and what types of fish they go after.
ii. The Main Commercial Fish - Whitefish
-A brief biology of the term whitefish, and the types of fish identified as such.
-Lake whitefish are found throughout much of Canada and parts of the northern United States, including all of the Great Lakes.
-How these fish caught by the fishing boats. (List actual information)
- Many amateur anglers also enjoy hooking this fish in the months of June, July and early August. A simple line and jig system is enough to catch the fish as they feast on mayflies and midges. In winter months, catching whitefish through the ice is very popular, particularly in northern Wisconsin, with many fishing guides specializing in this species. Successful ice fishing techniques include using a jigging spoon, with at least one "slider hook" above and separated from the spoon with a barrel swivel, and all hooks tipped with wax worms. Commercial fishing has allowed for the spread of this fish into many different markets, restaurants, and grocery store shelves.
-How they are processed after being caught and where they are taken to after being caught. This will include info on how they are caught and sold wholesale to fish markets; as well as the benefits of having dual job in running a fish market and being a commercial fisherman.
iii. Economy
-The fish markets in located in Marquette.
-A brief history of the fish markets within Marquette. This will include the history of Thill’s fish house and how it has presided over Marquette in the last fifty years.
- The expediential decline of fisheries and fishing industry in Marquette as a result of the economy and changing of the area.
-Where the fishing industry stands today in Marquette.
-(Conclusion): By the end, we will tie in how commercial fishing in the Great Lakes has, is still, contributing toward the economy in Marquette.
g. We will start by the old ore dock and end at the lower harbor area.
h. “Hooked on Lake Superior”
5. Objectives
a.
-To explain the role that commercial fishing played in Marquette’s lower harbor.
-To go over the evolution of commercial fishing in Lake Superior.
b. To allow the audience to understand the cultural importance commercial fishing played out in Marquette’s lower harbor.
